Berlin – Katarina Barley (SPD), Vice President of the European Parliament, has warned of Russian disinformation campaigns ahead of the European elections. „The Russian side tries to intervene and manipulate in every election,“ said the SPD politician to the newspapers of the Funke media group (Tuesday editions).
„And we must never underestimate the influence of Russia’s years of targeted disinformation on citizens in some EU countries, especially in Eastern and Central Europe: for example, there have been attitudes towards the Ukraine conflict that have nothing to do with reality.“ At the same time, Barley pointed out countermeasures taken by the EU. „Through European legislation, we have obligated major social media platforms to label political advertising, including the client,“ said the SPD lead candidate for the 2024 European elections. „In certain cases, they also have to take action against hate speech and disinformation.“
