Valeo is proud that the SCALA 3 LiDAR has been awarded the CES 2024 Innovation Award in the „Vehicle Tech & Advanced Mobility“ category.

The award recognizes Valeo’s leading role as a pioneer in the introduction of LiDAR technology in the automotive industry and its large-scale production. It shows that the industry recognizes the key role of LiDAR technology in the development of autonomous mobility.

SCALA 3, Valeo’s third-generation LiDAR perception system, offers an automotive-grade, high-resolution LiDAR sensor (Light Detection & Ranging) that enables advanced perception under all conditions and meets the highest quality and safety standards in the automotive industry. SCALA 3’s high-resolution point cloud and its associated AI-based perception software enable high-speed autonomous driving on highways under a wider range of conditions. This increases the value of Level-3 systems for end users by significantly expanding their range and scalability of the Level-4 robotaxi fleet.

Valeo’s ability to fulfill its promises is recognized by customers around the world. Valeo LiDAR equips the only Level-3 passenger cars approved in Europe, and the company announced orders totaling more than 1 billion euros for Valeo SCALA 3 in March 2023. Valeo, the world’s leading provider of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), was also the first company to mass-produce LiDAR sensors and perception software for Level 3 autonomous driving – and continues to be a leader in this field.

At CES 2024, to be held from January 8 to 12, Valeo will showcase the award-winning SCALA 3 LiDAR at its booth and give visitors the opportunity to learn about the AI-based perception software and how it helps classify the objects identified by LiDAR in the point cloud.

Valeo SCALA 1 and 2 have realized autonomous driving in traffic jams. SCALA 3 expands the range of application – and thus the customer benefit – of private vehicles thanks to its wider range of applications and higher speed support. Valeo is also a leader in robotaxi equipment, as SCALA 3 allows customers to realize robotaxis on a large scale by using proven best-in-class technology in mass production.

Thanks to its laser-based system, Valeo SCALA 3 creates a 3D image of the vehicle environment and provides a point cloud with unprecedented resolution for an automotive system. With more than 12 million pixels per second (x48 compared to SCALA 2) and a range of 200 meters for low reflectivity objects and 300 meters for high reflectivity objects, it detects objects that are invisible to the human eye. In addition to the hardware features, Valeo SCALA 3 has a range of software modules, including algorithms based on perception and artificial intelligence. The LiDAR functions guarantee unparalleled safety and reliability by detecting congestion, rain and splash water, online calibration, or misalignment detection. It will be able to recognize objects, such as a tire on an unlit, black asphalt road, at a distance of more than 150 meters – with unique detection performance compared to cameras and radars. Furthermore, objects are identified, classified and tracked, allowing the car fusion system to receive a complete 3D mapping of the vehicle’s environment and ultimately enabling autonomous driving. These software modules can be seamlessly embedded into the key SoC platforms and run on dedicated control units or domain controllers.

Valeo SCALA 3 LiDAR is also a finalist for the PACE Award 2023, the final results of which are expected to be announced in early 2024. Valeo’s LiDAR technology has already been awarded the SAFETYBEST Award 2023 and the ICA Summit Award 2023 in the „Automotive Sensor Hardware Solution of the Year“ category in May 2023, as well as the Pace Award in 2018, and the Frost & Sullivan Market Leadership Award in 2022.
